Dignity Therapy

Illness causes radical changes in the functioning of the physical body and confronts us with the inevitability of death, which is why sick people may experience existential suffering.

Dignity Therapy is a treatment to address the emotional and existential distress of people facing illness, based on reinforcing dignity: personal worth as a being endowed with free will.

Dr. Chochinov created a model to work on dignity reinforcement at the end of life after observing that preserving a sense of dignity has an effect on emotional state and healing.
His model is based on a brief intervention in which the sick person is helped to draw up a document setting out their personal worth through the most important episodes of their life, the lessons they have learned, their wishes for their loved ones, their hopes for the world, and words of gratitude..

This work allows them to understand, express, and leave a legacy.
From the “Pilgrimage of Friendship,” we start from this model by choosing two questions from Dr. Chochinov's questionnaire. I have added a third question because I believe in living intensely and experiencing the infinity of life:

1) What have you learned from life?
2) What would you like to pass on to others?
3) What dream would you like to fulfill?
My goal is to seek answers collectively and cooperatively with people I meet on my pilgrimage. We can share the journey to leave a joint legacy of what we have learned through life and illness and to feel the end and its meaning.
